Hervin Bunderson Elementary

Hervin Bunderson Elementary was named in honor of Hervin Bunderson, as mentioned in a previous post. The school was built in 1956 to help relieve the crowded conditions at the other two elementaries in town- Lincoln and Central. Around this time, Thiokol brought its business to Brigham City and the population nearly doubled in the period of a few short years. After Bunderson, Mountain View, Lake View, Foothill, and the new high school were all built within a decade to accommodate the growth. Bunderson Elementary quickly became too small due to the rapid home building in the northeast portion of Brigham City and an 8-room wing was added in 1961. In 1960, Bunderson Elementary had the highest enrollment in Brigham City with 543 students.

When it was decided that Bunderson Elementary would be named after Hervin Bunderson, Hervin’s wife asked if any other schools in the district were named after individuals. Hervin replied that Lincoln and McKinley (Tremonton) schools were, to which his wife (Leona) replied, “Well, you know what happened to those fellows, don’t you?”

Many individuals fought to keep Bunderson Elementary but it was eventually torn down and replaced by Golden Spike Elementary.
