John H. Bott came to Brigham City from England via New York. Family history notes that he lived with Alvin Nichols (in the area of the current post office) and first cut stone by helping "Brother Standing" from Call's Fort cut the stones used on the Tithing Office. He was later called on a mission to cut stone for the Salt Lake Temple and returned to Brigham City and established a monument company (more on this later.) Many of the older headstones in the Brigham City Cemetery carry "JH Bott" somewhere on the stone.
In 1916, John's sons built his headstone. It was built in 3 sections. The top two sections are polished Barrie granite. The bottom section is Cottonwood Granite- the same granite used in the SL Temple and is from a quarry near Salt Lake. The base was steeled and axed (meaning that it was smoothed but not polished) and weighs 9 ton. The entire monument weighs 21 ton and cost $4000 at that time.
