The “B” on the mountain east of Brigham City was placed in its current spot by the Box Elder Class of 1951-1952, according to Denton Beecher. It measures 125 feet by 75 feet and is lit every year for Homecoming.
It was originally placed in a spot lower and to the south (general location marked on picture) during the principalship of Alf Freeman. In this spot, the B was lit by setting fire to oil in tin cans. This created a potential fire hazard and a fire did break out at one point, threatening the mountain, home, and orchards of the Beecher family. Searl Beecher, Pupil Personnel Officer at Box Elder, worked with students to find a better spot and the current spot was selected.
I've included photos of the old high school field and a photo of the lighting of the B for 2024. Max Molgard took the photo of the current field.
